Podcast Ex Machina
A lot of people talk about how Shakespeare influenced today’s society and modern entertainment. But who or what inspired Shakespeare? This podcast can answer that question and so many more. Host Philip takes you back in time to analyze theatre right at the roots, analyzing Ancient Greek and Roman performances, plays, emperors, and playwrights. You will learn things about pantomime and Greek gods that you never thought you wanted to know, but it’s all quite fascinating.

Well done
I arrived at this podcast through The History of England. It’s beautifully narrated and very interesting. I’m more of a history buff than a theatre buff, but it is sure to satisfy both.

Informative and relaxing to listen to
This is exactly the podcast I was looking for. Philip has a lovely voice and I am enjoying relearning a lot of theatre history I’ve forgotten over the years. Thank you for making this content.

So fun!
Recently started listening to this podcast after a recommendation from the host of another history podcast I listen to. Im not really “in” to theatre but I love the host’s voice (very soothing) and his obvious enthusiasm for his subject. Well done and very well researched and presented.

A must-listen for theatre history fans
This is one of those marvellous podcasts that finds its niche and then enthuses about it extensively. Philip knows his stuff, and helpfully comes across as a keen student rather than an expert, so we get to follow him on his journey to know more, and we learn more on that journey too. An authoritative must-listen for anyone who wants to know more about the history of theatre.

Fascinating, detailed, even atmospheric!
I've listened to a few episodes now, and they are excellent; the author builds an idea of the environment which gives a sense of the atmosphere, quotes liberally from the plays, and is obviously in love with his subject. I know little about Greek theatre, and am loving learning more. Though seriously, those Greeks need some therapy...anyway, this podcast is excellent, I heartily recommend it

As a theatre design student listening to this podcast has helped me massively, it’s like listening to lectures (meant in the best way) while I work on designs.
Puts me in the right creative mindset, I can produce and learn at the same time!
