Bonus Episode 34: Polish Theatre Revisited with Dr Agata Luksza

Learning something I didn’t know before about some avenue of theatre history is always an exciting moment. Who knows what interesting new connections may be about to be revealed to me? Before talking to Dr Agata Luksza and reading her book I had little idea of what Polish theatre in the 19th century was like. What I really liked about Agata’s book is the way she brings stories of individuals to life while discussing the social impact of theatre and its fandom on Warsaw society.

Agata is an assistant professor at the Institute of Polish Culture, University of Warsaw. She graduated with honours from the University of Warsaw in cultural studies and journalism and holds a PhD from the same university in cultural studies. She is a theatre and performance scholar, haunted by nineteenth century history; a feminist inspired by women of the past; and a fangirl of fantasy and gothic narratives. Currently she works on unveiling Polish colonial histories hoping to prevent further replication of racial stereotypes in contemporary Poland. Her research has been widely published in both Polish and international academic journals (e.g. Theatre Journal, Feminist Media Studies, Contemporary Theatre Review, Pamiętnik Teatralny, Journal of Fandom Studies) and she appears as a cultural commentator in Polish media. She is the co-editor-in-chief of European Journal of Theatre and Performance.
