I’m always pleased to see a new episode from Peter land in my podcast feed because he always has a good theatrical story to tell and delivers it with tremendous verve and enthusiasm.
Peter certainly likes to delve into the detail, his podcast is littered with fascinating stories, big and small, from the highways and byways of Philadelphia theatre history, but for our conversation I persuaded him to give us a more general overview of theatre in Philadelphia, from how it got started to the present day and he was keen to point out the many links, in some cases one might say the dependency, on British and more generally European theatre throughout.
Peter Schmitz is an actor, dialect coach, and teacher of Theater History who lives in the Philadelphia area. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, he got his BA in History from Yale University, and his MFA in Acting from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program. Over the past 35 years, he has performed with many American regional theaters, including the Yale Rep in New Haven CT, the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis MN, the Penumbra Theatre in St. Paul MN, and the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC.
